There is a long-running argument among Khumbu trekkers about whether the view from Gokyo Ri beats the one from Kala Patthar. Having sent groups to both for years, our guides tend to side with Gokyo — you see four 8,000m peaks at once, with a chain of turquoise lakes below you.
The Gokyo valley runs parallel to the main Everest Base Camp trail, and it is noticeably quieter.
What You Get
- Six glacial lakes, the most striking blue water in the Khumbu
- Gokyo Ri (5,357m) with views of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Cho Oyu
- The Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in Nepal
- Substantially fewer trekkers than the Base Camp trail
- The option to link back to EBC over the Cho La pass
The Route
Twelve to fourteen days from Lukla is typical.
- Lukla (2,860m) to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) — the shared approach
- Dole (4,040m) and Machhermo (4,470m) — the valley turns north-west
- Gokyo (4,790m) — beside the third lake
- Gokyo Ri (5,357m) — the pre-dawn climb
- Optional fourth and fifth lakes, and Scoundrel’s Viewpoint
- Return via Namche, or cross the Cho La to Everest Base Camp
The climb up Gokyo Ri takes three to four hours in the dark and is steep throughout, but it is a walk rather than a climb.
Permits
- Sagarmatha National Park entry permit
- Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit
Roughly NPR 5,000 to 6,000 in total, the same as the standard Everest Base Camp trek.
Costs
- Guided packages typically USD 1,300 to USD 2,200 per person
- Includes Lukla flights, guide, porter, permits and teahouse board
- Add USD 15 to 25 per day for charging, Wi-Fi and drinks
Combining Gokyo with Everest Base Camp
Many trekkers link the two valleys over the Cho La (5,420m). It is a superb route but a meaningful step up in difficulty.
- Adds roughly four to five days
- Involves a glacier crossing and possible early-morning ice
- Requires better fitness and previous altitude experience
- Best attempted with a guide carrying appropriate equipment
If this is your first Himalayan trek, the straightforward out-and-back to Gokyo is the wiser choice.
Best Seasons
- October to November — the clearest lake colour and most stable weather
- March to May — warmer, with some haze building through spring
- Winter — the lakes freeze and lodges above Machhermo often close
- Monsoon — cloud and flight disruption make it impractical
Altitude Advice
Gokyo sits at 4,790m, higher than most trekkers have slept before.
- Take the acclimatisation night at Namche seriously
- Machhermo is the standard second acclimatisation stop
- Ascend slowly between Dole and Gokyo
- Tell your guide about headaches early rather than late
Ready to See Everest from the Lakes?
If you want the Khumbu’s great mountains without the Base Camp trail’s foot traffic, Gokyo is the smarter route — and the view from the summit is hard to beat.
At Global Rising Tours & Travel, we run Gokyo and Cho La departures with Sherpa guides who grew up in these valleys. Explore our Everest region treks and plan your 2026 walk.
