Kanchenjunga sits in Nepal’s far north-east corner, on the border with Sikkim, and at 8,586m it is the third-highest mountain on earth. The trek to its base camps is the most remote of Nepal’s major routes, and it sees a small fraction of the traffic of Everest or Annapurna.
This is a trek for people who want genuine wilderness and are willing to trade comfort for it.

The Route
Twenty to twenty-four days is realistic, and this is not a trek to rush.
- Fly Kathmandu to Bhadrapur, then a long drive to Taplejung
- Mitlung, Chirwa and Sekathum — the lower Tamur valley
- Ghunsa (3,595m) — the main Sherpa village and acclimatisation stop
- Kambachen (4,145m) and Lhonak (4,780m)
- Pangpema (5,143m) — the north base camp beneath the Kanchenjunga face
- Optional crossing of the Sele La passes to the south side
- Oktang (4,730m) — the south base camp
- Descend via Tseram and Yamphudin
Doing both base camps adds several days and a set of passes, but it is the complete version of the trek.
Permits
Kanchenjunga is a restricted area.
- Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit
- Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permit
- A minimum of two trekkers and a licensed guide are required
The restricted permit is considerably cheaper than Mustang’s, but the guide and group rules still apply.
Costs
- Guided packages typically USD 1,900 to USD 3,000 per person
- Internal flights to Bhadrapur and long jeep transfers add up
- Teahouses exist but are basic, and some sections need camping support
- Budget for a longer trip overall — this is a three-week commitment
Best Seasons
- October to November — the clearest and most settled weather
- April to May — rhododendron bloom, with more cloud
- Winter — heavy snow closes the upper valleys
- Monsoon — leeches, landslides and impassable roads
What to Expect
Set your expectations correctly and Kanchenjunga is superb. Set them wrong and it is a hard trip.
- Lodges are simple, and menus are limited compared to Khumbu
- Some nights may involve camping depending on the season
- Mobile signal and charging are unreliable for days at a time
- Evacuation options are limited, so insurance with helicopter cover is essential
- Trail traffic is genuinely low, and some days you will see nobody
