Ask ten operators when to visit Nepal and nine will say October. They are not wrong, but the honest answer depends on what you actually want — mountain views, flowers, solitude, low prices or cultural festivals all point to different months.
Here is how the year actually breaks down.
The Four Seasons at a Glance
- Autumn (September to November) — the peak season, clearest skies, busiest trails
- Spring (March to May) — warm, rhododendrons in bloom, second-best visibility
- Winter (December to February) — cold and quiet, often surprisingly clear
- Monsoon (June to August) — wet, green, cheap, and difficult for trekking
Month by Month
September
The monsoon retreats through the month. Early September is still wet, but by the last week the air clears dramatically. Trails are green, waterfalls are full, and the crowds have not yet arrived. A good gamble for the second half.
October
The single most popular month, and deservedly so. Skies are at their clearest, temperatures are comfortable at all elevations, and mountain visibility is excellent. Book flights, lodges and permits well in advance. Dashain usually falls this month, which affects domestic transport.
November
Nearly as clear as October with slightly fewer trekkers and colder nights at altitude. Many guides consider it the best month overall. Tihar usually falls here, and Kathmandu is beautifully lit.
December
Cold but frequently crystal clear. Lower treks like Poon Hill and Ghandruk are excellent. High passes begin to see snow, and some high lodges close. Very few trekkers, and prices soften.
January
The coldest month. High-altitude trekking is difficult, and passes such as Thorong La and Cho La are often closed. But Kathmandu Valley sightseeing, Chitwan and Pokhara are all pleasant, and mountain views can be superb.
February
Cold eases through the month. Late February is a genuinely good time — clear air, few people, and the first hints of spring at lower elevations. Losar falls around now in the Sherpa regions.
March
Spring begins properly. Rhododendron forests start blooming at lower altitudes, temperatures are pleasant, and visibility is still good. One of the best months for Poon Hill and the Annapurna foothills.
April
The peak spring month and the main Everest expedition season. Rhododendrons are spectacular between 2,500m and 3,500m. Some haze builds in the valleys, but high-altitude views remain excellent. Busy, though less so than October.
May
Warm and increasingly hazy at lower elevations. Still good high up, and the quietest of the spring months. Pre-monsoon storms begin late in the month. Hot in Chitwan and the Terai.
June
Monsoon arrives. Trails become wet and leech-prone, flights are frequently delayed, and mountain views are unreliable. Upper Mustang and Dolpo, in the rain shadow, remain excellent.
July
The wettest month across most of the country. Not a trekking month for the classic routes. Good for rain-shadow regions and for travellers who want an empty, green, inexpensive Nepal.
August
Similar to July, easing towards the end. Landslides can close roads. Prices are at their lowest and Kathmandu is quiet. Janai Purnima and Teej fall around now.
Choosing by Priority
- Clearest mountain views — October, November, December
- Rhododendron blooms — late March and April
- Fewest people — January, February, June to August
- Lowest prices — monsoon months
- High passes open — March to May, October to November
- Wildlife in Chitwan and Bardia — February to April
- Festivals — September through November
A Practical Recommendation
If this is your first trip and mountains are the priority, come in late October or November. If you want flowers and slightly fewer people, come in late March. If budget matters more than views, monsoon Nepal is beautiful in its own right and costs a fraction as much.
