Nagarkot sits on a ridge at 2,175m on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, and it is the most accessible Himalayan viewpoint in Nepal. On a clear morning the panorama stretches across five major ranges, and on exceptional days Everest itself is visible on the far eastern horizon.
It is the classic overnight escape from Kathmandu, and it works particularly well combined with Bhaktapur.
What You Can See
- The Annapurna range to the west
- Manaslu and Ganesh Himal
- Langtang, directly north and closest of all
- Rolwaling and Jugal ranges
- Everest, visible on genuinely clear days, though small and distant
Set expectations honestly about Everest. It is a long way off and appears as a modest dark triangle. Langtang is far more impressive from here.
When to Go
Season matters enormously at Nagarkot.
- October to December — the clearest skies of the year, and the best odds
- January to February — cold but frequently spectacular
- March to April — increasingly hazy as spring dust builds
- May to September — monsoon cloud usually blocks the view entirely
If mountain views are the point of your trip, come between October and February. In spring haze the view is often disappointing.
Where to Watch
- Your hotel rooftop, if you choose accommodation on the ridge’s north side
- Nagarkot View Tower, about 25 minutes’ walk uphill from the main area
- The old army viewpoint at the ridge’s southern end
The View Tower is worth the early walk. Start about 45 minutes before sunrise, and bring a torch.
Getting There
- About 32km east of Kathmandu, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road
- Around 45 minutes from Bhaktapur
- Taxis are easy to arrange in Kathmandu or Bhaktapur
- Local buses run from Bhaktapur, slowly
The natural combination is Bhaktapur in the afternoon, overnight at Nagarkot, sunrise, then return.
Where to Stay
- Resorts along the north-facing ridge with mountain-view rooms
- Mid-range hotels near the main junction
- Budget guesthouses, though views vary significantly
Always ask specifically for a north-facing room with a mountain view. Many rooms face the wrong way, and the price difference is usually small.
Hiking from Nagarkot
Nagarkot is also a fine base for easy day walks.
- Nagarkot to Changu Narayan — about four hours, mostly downhill, through villages and terraces
- Nagarkot to Dhulikhel — a longer ridge walk of six to seven hours
- Short forest walks along the ridge itself
The Changu Narayan walk is one of the best easy hikes in the valley and ends at a superb fifth-century temple.
Practical Tips
- It is genuinely cold at dawn, even in autumn — bring warm layers
- Check the forecast, but be aware valley weather changes fast
- Arrive the evening before; sunrise day trips from Kathmandu rarely work
- Sunset from the ridge is also excellent and far less crowded
- Allow a second morning if the first is clouded
