Most travellers drive straight past Bandipur on the highway between Kathmandu and Pokhara, which is a genuine shame. Sitting on a ridge above the valley, this preserved Newari town has a car-free main street, Himalayan views and an atmosphere entirely unlike anywhere else on that route.
It is the ideal way to break a long drive into two comfortable halves.
Why Stop in Bandipur

- Panoramic views of Annapurna, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri and Langtang
- A genuinely relaxed pace after Kathmandu’s intensity

- Roughly halfway between Kathmandu and Pokhara
The town was a prosperous trading post on the India–Tibet route until the highway bypassed it in the 1970s. That economic decline is precisely why the architecture survived unaltered.
Things to Do
- Walk the main bazaar in the late afternoon when the light is best
- Climb to Thani Mai Temple for sunrise over the Himalaya
- Visit Siddha Gufa, one of the largest caves in Nepal
- Take the short hike to Ramkot, a traditional Magar village
- Watch the sunset from Tundikhel, the old parade ground on the ridge edge
Thani Mai at sunrise is the highlight. It is a steep twenty-minute climb, and the view over the cloud-filled valley with the Annapurnas behind is exceptional.
Siddha Gufa
The cave is a genuinely impressive half-day excursion.

- About an hour’s walk downhill from Bandipur
- A local guide with a torch is strongly advisable
- The floor is uneven and often slippery
- Bats are numerous, so it is not for the squeamish
Getting There
- About 143km from Kathmandu, roughly four to five hours
- About 80km from Pokhara, roughly two hours
- Leave the Prithvi Highway at Dumre, then climb 8km up the ridge
- Local jeeps run regularly from Dumre
Any Kathmandu–Pokhara tourist bus can drop you at Dumre.
Where to Stay
- Restored Newari townhouses converted into guesthouses on the main street
- A handful of boutique heritage hotels
- Simple family-run lodges at very reasonable rates
Ask for an upper-floor room facing north. The mountain views from bed are worth the small premium.
Best Time to Visit
- October to December — the clearest Himalayan views
- February to April — warm, with spring blossom
- May to June — hazy, and hot in the middle of the day
- Monsoon — green and atmospheric, but mountains are usually hidden
How Long to Stay
- One night — the standard stop, enough for sunset and sunrise
- Two nights — allows Siddha Gufa and the village walks
- A day visit — possible, but you miss the town’s best hours
Bandipur’s charm is concentrated in early morning and late evening, which is exactly when day trippers are not there.
