Rara is another place that people think of when traveling on their vacation. Situated in the Far northwestern part of Nepal, Rara Lake is the biggest lake in Nepal. It is located at an altitude of 2990 m. The number of tourists rose after the Surkhet-Jumla section of Karnali Highway was completed. One can enjoy boating at the clear water of Rara, hike to nearby hills with a breathtaking view of mountauins and hills. The lake, being the main attraction of the place looks like a blue nymph. The place shelters numerous wildflowers and herbs at its shores. Various birds and different species of mammals can be observed also including 500 different kinds of flowers at Rara National Park.


Things to Know

  • Diving/Swimming at the Rara Lake is strictly prohibited.
  • As the lake is under surveillance of Nepal Army, discipline and safety would be a must.
  • Littering around the site would not be taken lightly by the locals.

Chuchemara Dauda (4087 m) is the best sight-seeing point to get the magnificent views of the deep blue clear lake and highly forested hillside. The clear, high altitude lake of Rara mirrors the snow-capped Himalayas which is ringed with pine, spruce, and juniper forest.
More than 500 different kinds of flowers and herbs including Rhododendrons, Black Juniper, Oak, West Himalayan Spruce and Himalayan Cypress are found in this park. It is home to 20 different species of mammals and 214 species of birds.
During winters you will be able to witness the migratory birds from various regions around the world and during summers the Himalayan flowers surround the lake creating a vibrant landscape. On your journey, you will not only be in the presence of snowcapped mountains, forests, and enchanting lakes but will also get to witness the rustic life of the locals who call this remote land their home.
